New Leadership Team for VeloCity
VeloCity, the University of Waterloo’s innovative student startup incubator program, is well-positioned to build on its current success with the appointment of two outstanding leaders to its team: Mike Kirkup is the new Director and Brett Shellhammer is its new Executive-in-Residence.
Mike Kirkup was at Research in Motion for 10 years, where he was Senior Director, Global Developer Relations. He has a wealth of technical and business development expertise in the mobile application space and brings with him a professional network encompassing several key industries and international markets. He has a Bachelor of Mathematics in Computer Science and a Masters of Management Science from the University of Waterloo.
Beyond providing overall strategic leadership and direction, Mike will focus on key business development and partnership opportunities with the startup, venture capital, government and corporate communities. He will also act in an advisory capacity to VeloCity students while continuing to pursue the development of his own startup.
Brett Shellhammer brings a wealth of knowledge and experience gained through 16 years in Silicon Valley, working for 5 startups, the last one as President and COO of iVenturi. He is currently an EIR with Communitech. In addition to his experience in the Valley, Brett’s previous roles include SVP of Marketing at Coreworx (Kitchener), SVP of Product Management at Eloqua (Toronto) and VP & General Manager of the Global 2000 & Government Business Unit at Open Text. He has a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Penn State.
Brett has worked with several of the VeloCity teams over the past year and the knowledge, expertise and enthusiasm he brings as the key coach for our student startups will be invaluable while leveraging his continuing EIR work with Communitech’s Venture Service Group.
The appointment of these two individuals bolsters what is already an incredible network of VeloCity advisors focused on the coaching and mentorship of our students. That network includes Ali Asaria (Well.ca), David Crow, Ted Livingston (Kik Interactive, VeloCity alumnus), Michael Litt and Devon Galloway (Vidyard, VeloCity alumni), and Dan Silivestru (formerly of tinyHippos, currently RIM).
