Checking in with GooseChase

Back in October we announced that two-time VeloCity End of Term winner GooseChase was heading to South America to participate in Start-Up Chile. It’s been a few months since they left and it turns out they’ve been quite busy. Here’s what Andrew Cross, GooseChase CEO, had to say about their decision to head to Chile and how GooseChase is doing as a result:

Leaving the startup community in Waterloo to travel halfway around the world was one of the toughest decisions I’ve ever had to make. On top of the fact that none of us spoke Spanish, there was a huge risk that we’d lose all the momentum we had worked so hard to create. And while I’m certain we have lost some momentum on the sales and marketing front, our productivity on the technical side has more than made up for it.

Looking at the big picture, I have no doubt that we would be nowhere near where we are now if we hadn’t gone. It’s not something you truly grasp until you’ve experienced the alternative, but our lives are full of distractions. Friends, family, and even startup events are all good things, but they take time. And time isn’t something that startups have a lot of.

Now I’m not saying that you need to move halfway around the world and live a hermitic lifestyle to succeed, but focusing on quite literally nothing but your startup does have its advantages. This type of laser-like focus allows you to iterate faster and find product-market fit sooner. There is a reason that the stereotypical founder is a single 20-something with very few commitments. Extra time makes a huge difference.

With all this time to focus in South America, we’ve gotten a ton of work done, and over the next two weeks, we’ll be putting it all to the test!

First, we’ll be launching the long-awaited v2.0 of GooseChase, rebuilt entirely from the ground up. This includes a brand new website, new iPhone and Android apps and a refreshed look and feel. All around the board, everything has been simplified, making it a lot easier to get a game going. As a founder you have a vision of what you want the product to become – this release is a huge step forward for us.

Second, to celebrate the launch of the new platform, GooseChase is heading to the South by Southwest Conference (SXSW) in Austin, Texas. In addition to pitching at the Accelerator competition (one of 8 selected for the Entertainment category), we’ll be running a mega-GooseChase to highlight all the hottest startups. Since each mission will feature a startup and their product, it’s the most entertaining, interactive guide to SXSW you can get. Some of the missions are already shaping up to be pretty hilarious, so I encourage everyone to check it out (www.goosechase.com/sxsw). Even if you aren’t going to be in Austin, it’s an awesome way to track what’s going on without being there!

All in all, it’s been a crazy four months. We’ve still got two months remaining in Start-Up Chile, but we’ve already started planning our return to Waterloo. It’s shaping up to be quite the summer and we’re incredibly excited to see what the rest of the year has in store.

Keep on GooseChasing!

Andrew
