Rounding off the term with VeloCity Demo Day

VeloCity Demo Day was a success!

This past Thursday, November 22, we had 12 University of Waterloo student startup companies pitch and showcase their ideas in the Davis Centre Foyer from 12 – 3 pm. We host Demo Day every term to give University of Waterloo startup companies the chance to get some more exposure to the campus community as well as VeloCity stakeholders. The pitches this term were the best we’ve had yet! Ideas were also extremely varied – we had companies focusing on many different industries, from organic food to corporation training to course selection to fashion and politics.

After much deliberation from our expert panel of judges, Wayne Chang, President of Pivotry Consulting GroupAmanie Ismail, co-founder at Kue Software and ProductWikiBen Hagon, Creative Director at Hagon Design, and Nabil Fahel, Senior Analyst, VSG, at Communitech, and the people who voted, we announced the winning teams:

Mantaphrase: Elevator Award Winner

The judges chose Mantaphrase, a digital phrasebook app for communicating in a foreign language, as winners of $1,000 for their great pitch.

Projexity: Innovation Award Winner

Projexity, an online crowd funding platform for urban improvement projects, was chosen by the judges as the most innovative project, winning them $1,000.

inVUZE: People’s Choice Award Winner

inVUZE, an application that lets you control screens from your phone, racked up the most votes from you and won $1,000 for People’s Choice!

For our Twitter contest, we gave away two pairs of Dre Beats. The first went to Jamie Wong, @jlfwong, for being one of the first 100 tweeters @UWVeloCity using #uwDemoDay. Then, he got to choose his favourite startup to get the second pair – lucky for Flow, they were it!

A huge thanks goes out to everyone who made this event possible – we really appreciate your continued support and couldn’t pull it off without you.

Demo Day was the second last VeloCity event this term – that’s right, we have one more!

Tricia Mumby will coming this Wednesday, November 28 at 7:30 pm to RCH 306 to talk about how she built her successful non-tech company, Mabel’s Labels. There will be free pizza and entrepreneurial insight, register here!

Stay tuned from the latest & greatest news on entrepreneurship from VeloCity, we’re already gearing up for next term and are very excited!
