Startups who won BIG at Velocity Fund Finals

Last Thursday during an exciting and eventful Velocity Fund Finals, 6 startups won major funding. With a large crowd looking on in the audience, and on Livestream, we watched three $1K prizes be awarded. Out of 10 competing companies, Suncayr won two of the awards: Most Innovative and People’s Choice, and Boogaloo Bunks won Best Pitch. Here’s what the $1K winners had to say about their experience:

“We are extremely grateful to have received these awards and they will really help us get to the next step. It is amazing to be surrounded by such like-minded innovative entrepreneurs.”- Rachel Pautler, Co-Founder & CEO of Suncayr

“There’s no better feeling than pitching something you’ve been working so hard on to a massive audience full of your friends and family. Boogaloo Bunks would like to give a HUGE thanks to the Velocity team for putting together such a supportive event. – Caleb Polley, Founder of Boogaloo Bunks

The afternoon competition following the $1K awards was electrifying as 10 startups competed for four $25K awards. In the end, ExVivo Labs, GroboMAJiK Systems and Ubiq held up their big $25K cheques to a large audience in the Student Life Centre at the University of Waterloo.

Ubiq won an additional $10K for best hardware startup – an award introduced last term for the first time. The $25K winners reflect on VFF:

“This is an enormous opportunity for us at ExVivo, and a flash-point, we hope, for science-based start-ups in the Velocity program at the University of Waterloo. We can’t wait to pour all our efforts into making ExVivo a success.” – Eric Blondeel & Moufeed Kaddoura, Co-Founders of ExVivo Labs.

“The field of startups was the strongest and most innovative we’ve seen in the competition, including some great ideas in the hardware and manufacturing sectors. It was all the sweeter for us because we were runners up last term. No regrets!” -Michael Tatham, Co-Founder & CEO of MAJiK Systems
