Catching up with Velocity Fund $25K winner, AVRO Life Science

This past December, Velocity hosted the Fall 2016 Velocity Fund Finals (VFF), a pitch competition that awards $125,000 each term to help startups build their business. We caught up with one of the $25K winners, AVRO Life Science, for a post-VFF update. Watch their pitch. On March 30th, another twenty startups will compete at the Velocity Fund Finals at the University of Waterloo to pitch for key funding. Come join us to watch!

1. How has your company developed since winning VFF?

We are continuing our R&D and have been working extensively on growing our team. We have brought on our first full-time co-op student to help us in the next stages of characterizing our patch formulations.

2. What is your company currently working on?

We are now moving towards analytical characterization of our patch in both its chemical and mechanical properties. Once our target values are met, we will begin working towards small scale manufacturing before our pre-clinical research.

3. What do you enjoy most about building a startup?

Honestly, one of the most satisfying things about building a company is being able to pay it forward. Even though we are still a bit young, nothing feels as better than being able to help another founder or team with their struggles, because we are all in this together!

4. What did you like most about competing at VFF?

The exposure to a wide range of local and international resources is what makes VFF so great. From 500 Startups, to MaRS, to Dorm Room Fund, winning the VFF has helped us grow our network exponentially.

5. Are there any tips you can give to startups that are pitching?

Be passionate! The world wants a solution to your problem as much as you want to make one, so don’t be afraid to love your idea. Even if you don’t win, if you work hard there will always be another opportunity waiting around the corner. Also, having a semi-working demo is better than no demo at all!

On March 30, twenty startups will compete at the Velocity Fund Finals in the SLC at the University of Waterloo to pitch for their share of $125,000. Don’t miss this event by registering to attend! Come join us for a great event with awesome pitches and free boxed lunches for the first 200 attendees. Audience members and Livestream participants will have a chance to win 1 of 5 UE Boom Bluetooth Speakers!
