Executing events: Velocity Programs Assistant Co-op

Every term, Velocity hires three co-op students to do key work on the marketing, programs, and science teams. If you are a University of Waterloo student, consider applying for the positions through WaterlooWorks for the upcoming Fall 2017 term. This blog post is one of three in a series where past Velocity co-op students reflect on their experiences working in this one-of-a-kind workplace.

This past winter, Alexa Fuentes Valdez completed her co-op term as Velocity’s Programs Assistant. Alexa chose the co-op program at the University of Waterloo to gain work experience to help with the full-time job search after graduating. Alexa enjoys planning events in her spare time, and wanted more experience running large-scale events in a place where she could make a direct impact on the community, so she decided Velocity was the right place to do it.

On a day-to-day basis, Alexa helped the Programs team plan the logistics of events and Velocity Residence programming. There was never a dull moment, as Alexa worked with the team to plan and support large on-campus events, such as the Velocity pitch competitions, and weekly workshops in Velocity Start. Alexa notes that the experience she gained through running these events has helped her break out of her shell and try activities outside of her comfort zone.

In addition to the event planning experience Alexa received during her work term, she also landed a volunteer position with one of the startups based in the Velocity Garage, Marlena Books.

“I’m excited to be volunteering with Marlena Books over the summer to help them further their mission of dignifying people with dementia, by contributing to the creation of therapeutic books. I’ve always been interested in the health of the elderly and I’m so happy Velocity has given me the opportunity to learn more.” – Alexa Fuentes Valdez, Velocity Programs Assistant W17

If you are a current University of Waterloo student and are interested in organizing events and programs, apply to the Programs Assistant co-op posting on WaterlooWorks for your next co-op term!
