The countdown is on for the Velocity Fund Finals
On July 20th, twenty startups will pitch new exciting business ventures at the Velocity Fund Finals, a pitch competition that awards $125,000 in funding to the University of Waterloo’s most innovative emerging startups. Each team will spend countless hours practicing and refining each pitch as much-needed capital is at stake. Come on out to catch the action!
Established in 2011, the Velocity Fund helps innovative companies grow and succeed by providing funding to startups three times annually at the Velocity Fund Finals. Velocity takes no equity and no intellectual property in return for the grants. Our sole reward is helping to build successful companies. At the end of the day, four exceptional companies will each receive $25,000, as well as $5,000 in intellectual property legal services from PCK to enable their development. Earlier in the day, three of UWaterloo’s newest startups will receive $5,000 in grants to assist them in building their business.
The $5K event starts at 11:00am with ten pitches from student-run startups. Each competitor will have 3 minutes to impress the judges with their pitch to win critical funding. At noon, attendees will have a chance to network with the $5K companies while enjoying a free boxed lunch courtesy of Velocity! Lunches are limited: first-come, first-served, so come early!
At 1:00pm, the competition heats up with ten seasoned startups pitching for four $25K prizes, with the top hardware company receiving an additional $10K in funding. We will announce the finalists for both the $25K and $5K competitions on July 7. In the meantime, watch Serenity Bioworks’ winning $25K pitch from Winter 2017, which was also the recipient of the additional $10K hardware or science prize.
The event may will wrap up at 3:00pm, but for winning startups it’s just the beginning. Please join us at the Velocity Fund Finals on Thursday, July 20th at the University of Waterloo Student Life Centre. Attendees have a chance to win one of 5 VR headsets, and we also have tons of Velocity swag to give away to people in the audience! If you can’t make it in person, tune into our live stream to hear great pitches.
