Velocity is hiring an Associate Director

The search has begun for the next Associate Director of Velocity, Canada’s leading entrepreneurship program, based out of the University of Waterloo. We are looking for someone who is a natural team builder, collaborator, communicator, and strategic thinker. Is that you?

The Associate Director plays a crucial role in the direction and growth of Velocity, which oversees five University of Waterloo entrepreneurship programs, including the Velocity Garage, a 37,000 sq. ft. startup incubator that is home to 80+ startups. Campus programs include the Velocity Fund, a startup pitching competition that awards $375,000 in grants per year, Velocity Residence, a dorm for student entrepreneurs, Velocity Science, an on-campus lab and community for science startups, and Velocity Start, a place for students to discover entrepreneurship through weekly workshops, startup coaching, and more.

This is an incredible opportunity to make a direct impact on the startup community in Waterloo region and beyond, enabled by the incredible diverse student talent at UWaterloo. The Associate Director will work closely with the Director to set the strategy, overall vision, and direction of Velocity, as well as provide hands-on guidance on the day-to-day operations of Velocity as it relates to finances, events, marketing, communications, metric tracking, and reporting. The candidate will help lead a high performing and tight-knit team of 18, while ensuring a healthy, supportive team culture. Velocity’s Operations, Programs, and Marketing Managers report to this position, and the Associate Director is responsible for recruiting, coaching, and dismissal of staff in general. A high level of financial literacy is required, as the candidate will lead the creation of yearly budgets and financial statements for Provost approval, while providing oversight of the budget and approval of spending. They will also work to track metrics for reporting, and report to the University and funding partners to convey success stories.

The Associate Director will act as a bridge between key University of Waterloo and global entrepreneurship programs, working to build relationships, establish consensus, and find ways to work together. Velocity receives a high level of interest from other national and international universities, community organizations, and other stakeholders, and the Associate Director will represent the University of Waterloo to highlight our programming and discuss how to advance entrepreneurship. This role also involves developing relationships with venture capitalists, angel investors, government leaders, and entrepreneurs. In addition, the role manages key relationships with organizations that provide funding and other support for start-up programs (examples include OCE, IRAP, etc). The candidate is expected to have senior management-level experience, and working knowledge of the startup environment, as well as a university environment. They are capable of managing multiple demanding priorities and possess strong communication skills.

Are you a great fit for this role? Please apply at the UW HR site by Friday, November 3. If you have any questions, feel free to contact Nancy Heide at nheide@uwaterloo.ca.
