Velocity is hiring a Business Advisor and a Campus Lead Mentor

Do you want to make a direct impact on the startup community in Waterloo Region and beyond? Velocity is hiring for two roles, a Business Advisor and a Campus Lead Mentor. In joining Velocity, you will become an integral part of Canada’s most productive startup incubator. This awesome community of entrepreneurs is solving global problems by building scalable startups and includes a far-reaching pipeline of University of Waterloo campus-based entrepreneurship programs. The successful incumbents will join a high performance tight-knit team of 15 at Velocity.

BUSINESS ADVISOR

Reporting to the Director, the incumbent will be 1 of 5 Business Advisors directly supporting founders and startups working out of the Velocity Garage incubator. The Business Advisor team is comprised of people with first-hand start-up experience, who have either had, or been part of, the early-stages of a startup themselves. They use this first-hand experience, combined with their other industry experiences to support founders via:

  • 1:1 coaching of early/growth-stage startups
  • Meeting with companies on an ongoing basis
  • Supporting the creation of programs, events and infrastructure
  • Leveraging and extending the Velocity support network of other domain experts

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Reviewing and interviewing prospective startups applying to Velocity
  • Managing companies use of Velocity resources and space
  • Making startup exit decisions
  • Representing Velocity at key events and tours, and with partners

The Business Advisor team supports the ~80 companies at the Velocity Garage and select teams on-campus. Each Advisor has a portion of that portfolio that they are the primary Advisor on, developing a deeper relationship and understanding with that company and its founders. We take pride in our commitment to build deep and lasting relationships with the founders we support, and the Business Advisor team digs in and “gets their hands” dirty. This is possible because of the full-time nature of this team and their orientation to want to dive into the complex, messy and difficult to navigate challenges of startups.

The Business Advisor we’re looking to add to the Velocity team must have in-depth experience and expertise in one or more of:

  • Founding / leading a startup through go to market and commercialization
  • Customer discovery, problem validation, concept maturing
  • Building software based products / businesses (e.g. mobile, SaaS, dev-ops)
  • Building AI/data science based products/businesses
  • Sales and growth strategy
  • Seed/Series-A fundraising

We have a strong preference for this position to be full-time, but for exceptional candidates we would consider part-time (minimum 3 days/week). A high degree of organizational abilities, interpersonal acumen, and problem solving is required to deeply assist startups and founders, and balance Velocity’s multiple priorities, partners, facilities, and programs.

Feeling uncomfortably excited about this opportunity/role? Think you’re a great fit? We’d love to hear from you. Please apply with a resume and letter of interest via this link.

First review of applications on June 10.

We will do our best to consider applications submitted after that date.

Position details:

  • 1 year contract
  • Salary band: USG 12
  • Target start: July 2018 or sooner

CAMPUS LEAD MENTOR

Reporting to the Director and working closely with Associate Director, the incumbent will lead Velocity’s mentorship and coaching activities serving the University of Waterloo community, including undergraduate and graduate students, as well as faculty, researchers, and others. In joining Velocity, you will become an integral part of UWaterloo’s largest and farthest reaching entrepreneurship program, where you will build and support the university’s entrepreneurial pipeline. The Campus Lead Mentor will have past experiences relevant to early-stage ideation and commercialization that would be leveraged to assist members of the campus community, specifically through:

  • 1:1 coaching of campus-connected projects/teams/early-stage companies
  • Training other (part-time) mentors and UW entrepreneurship supporters on how to assist early stage projects/teams
  • Preparing and advising student projects, including those involved in our pitch competitions
  • Assisting in the development of programs (e.g. workshops, talks, and events)
  • Working with other campus partners to ensure strong mutual links between each others’ programs

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Building and managing a team of campus mentors (currently not in place)
  • Reviewing pitch competition applications
  • Representing Velocity at key campus events
  • Assisting with mentorship and coaching in other Velocity campus initiatives
(e.g. Velocity Residence and Velocity Science)

This is a new role at Velocity, so there will be some evolution and direction setting required from the successful candidate; however, the envisioned impact is to create and deploy the materials, processes, and people across campus that can provide powerful mentorship experiences for the earliest (and often messiest) stages of startup commercialization.

VELOCITY BACKGROUND

Velocity’s mission is to ignite and fuel the entrepreneurial spirit in the pursuit of economic and social value creation. We do this in two ways: supporting startups and cultivating an entrepreneurial culture and pipeline within the UWaterloo community. Pipeline building within the campus community is focused around providing inspiration, information and guidance as it relates to entrepreneurship and startup commercialization. Supporting startups is focused around discovering opportunities, building product and preparing for growth and scale. We pay special attention to cultivating a high-performance environment in which founders can grow and succeed.

Our mission is executed via five University of Waterloo entrepreneurship programs, including the Velocity Garage, a 37,000 sq. ft. startup incubator in downtown Kitchener (open to all startups, not just UWaterloo affiliated); campus programs include the Velocity Fund, a startup pitch competition that awards nearly $400,000 in grants per year; Velocity Residence, a dorm for student entrepreneurs; Velocity Science, an on-campus lab and community for science startups; and Velocity Start, a place for students to discover entrepreneurship through weekly workshops, startup coaching, and more.

Velocity has been in operation for 10 years and has a demonstrated track record, having helped incubate 300+ companies, which have raised $750+ million in investment, and which employ 2,250 people.
